Leadership and governance

Freshfields became a limited liability partnership in 2008. It is regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority. Several committees oversee the firm and decide how it is run. Here’s a brief explanation of the two main ones.

Partnership Council

The Partnership Council is the firm’s top policy body. It monitors the firm’s performance, reviews the firm’s strategy and considers nominations for leadership appointments, merger proposals and the business needs case for appointing internal or lateral hire partners.

The Partnership Council has delegated responsibility for day-to-day decision-making to the central management team (the senior partner and the managing partner, supported by the executive partner and the general counsel).

Practice Committee

The firm’s main operational body, the Practice Committee supports the chief executive and others to develop the firm’s practice groups.

Our history

We’ve been around in the UK since 1743 and in Germany since 1840. Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer was formed in 2000 when Freshfields joined forces with Bruckhaus Westrick Heller Löber and Deringer Tessin Herrmann & Sedemund.

Freshfields offers world-leading legal advice. But we also want to offer clients enhanced experiences, improved efficiencies, closer collaboration and transformational thinking.

To that end, the Freshfields Hub and Freshfields Lab focus on constant innovation, relentless client focus and cutting-edge technology, enabling our clients to navigate today’s most complex challenges with confidence, and connect with the opportunities that will shape their futures.
