Mary Barton

Wide ranging experience in international private and public law family issues.  I specialise in all matters where issues arise out of ‘family’ relationships, such as:

Breakdown of relationships, separation and divorce as well as cross-border, residence and contact disputes in relation to children and finance and property issues.

I also help couples looking to prevent difficulties arising in the future by entering into Nuptial Agreements.

I have the experience to not only litigate in the appropriate forum but to also utilise Collaborative Law principles and offer mediation as an alternative.  It is essential to remember that reaching agreement always works best, rather than enduring the additional emotional distress and financial expense of litigation.

Formerly based in London and Essex, latterly in the United Arab Emirates (Dubai) and now in Bulgaria I have  a global client base.  Not only do I have extensive  experience of representing individuals before Courts, but I also have extensive experience as an individual party’s appointed expert witness and as a single joint expert witness, providing written reports or Affidavits and giving oral evidence to Courts in various jurisdictions.  My experience and expertise in UAE (Dubai, Abu Dhabi etc) family law, is recognised at The Academy of Experts, London and in my accreditation as a Member of that body.

I am an energetic parent and grand-parent who came to the legal profession ‘by accident’. In 1992 I graduated from the impressive Law Department of The University of Essex, where my tutors included the late Professor Sir Nigel Rodley, Professor Dame Carolyn Hamilton and Professor Francoise Hampson (to name but a few). I then worked as a Paralegal with a local law firm in Essex until my youngest child reached an age where I could travel to complete the Academic Stage of my training, which I did in 1997. After completion of my Solicitor’s Training Contract in London (and taking numerous further examinations to complete my post-graduate Diploma in Legal Practice) I was admitted to the Roll of Solicitors on 1 February 2000.

Asked her biggest challenge to date and Stacy will point to raising three teenage daughters.  Studying for bar exams, orchestrating divorce trials, handling depositions, or arguing with other lawyers pales in comparison to mediating disputes over daughters borrowing shoes or makeup without asking.

Stacy is the founder and managing partner of Right Lawyers in Las Vegas, Nevada. For over a decade Stacy has been one of the top divorce attorneys in the area. Her ability to negotiate disputes and knack for uncovering important issues has been key to her success as a divorce attorney and mother.

Stacy graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Whittier College in 1991. She went on to earn her law degree from the University Of San Diego School Of Law in 1996. Stacy is admitted to practice law in the State of Nevada. She is also admitted to practice before the U.S. Federal District Court and the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.

Personal Insights

Married for 22 years and mother of the girls; Jenna, Jordan and Jessica.

What would you do if not a lawyer? Be a park ranger. I love being in nature.

Favorite movie seen recently? The Hunger Games.

A proud moment from your childhood? Winning my 6th grade spelling bee with the word “coincidentally”.

Most Memorable Case?

When I was in law school, I was forced to sue my landlord in San Diego County Court.  He wouldn’t return my deposit.  It was the first time I had been in a real court as a new attorney.   I was fully prepared for every question the judge was going to ask and every answer the landlord was going to say.  I won.   15 years later,  after winning dozens of much bigger cases, it’s still my favorite case.

What Makes You a Good Divorce Attorney?

I am over prepared, maybe to a fault.  Like in the lawsuit involving my landlord in law school,  I prepare for every possible situation or scenario. I want to have thought out every question that can be asked, and every answer  that can be given.

He has represented thousands of clients, argued innumerable cases before the Trial Courts and Appellate Courts of the State of New Jersey and is recognized for his experience in the field of family law. Jeff has been called upon by other matrimonial attorneys to serve both as an expert and mediator in their own cases and receives referrals on a regular basis from other attorneys, including those whom he has opposed in previous matters.

He has conducted many seminars for the New Jersey Institute of Continuing Legal Education. Jeff is a Fellow of both the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and the International Academy of Family Lawyers, as well as a member of the Essex County Bar Association, the New Jersey State Bar Association, the American Bar Association, and the Association of Trial Lawyers of America. Law Firm Overview:

A titan of the New Jersey matrimonial bar, Jeffrey P. Weinstein had a vision for a different kind of family law firm. With a rising rate of divorce and an ever-changing body of law, he sought to create a firm that combined legal savvy with an intense and exclusive focus on clients. He recognized that facing a deeply painful time of life, clients needed to call upon trusted advisors, not merely technical practitioners.

He established a firm governed by these principles. That commitment lasts today.

With Jeffrey’s son, Evan, now taking the helm, WL&W has emerged as a nationally recognized practice with a deep bench of attorneys wholly committed to client service.

Ros Bever

I am a Partner in our Manchester office and national head of Irwin Mitchell’s Divorce & Family Law team.

I offer help and advice to people when their relationship comes to an end – or assist them in planning for the potential consequences of that happening. Pre-marital and post-marital agreements may not be the most romantic prospect, but they can be vital to map out next steps for couples and families in the event that things do break down in the future.

I have a particular specialism in financial provision for children, where the parents were never married. I’m a Resolution accredited specialist and in 2016 I was the only divorce lawyer outside London to make The Lawyer’s Hot 100 list. My team has been successfully nominated and short-listed for a number of national legal awards in the past two years, of which we have won several.

I am part of the Private Wealth team and have extensive experience acting in high-net-worth and ultra-high-net-worth cases, frequently involving complex international issues, high value trust structures and pension arrangements. However, I do not exclusively represent these cases and am always passionate about fighting for a fair outcome for my clients, whatever their situation.

The benefits of working as part of a national family team are tremendous. I am part of one of the largest, if not the largest family team in the country. This facilitates knowledge sharing on a level which cannot be beaten by our competitors. As part of a full-service law firm, I have unrivalled support from the firm’s other teams, across all disciplines and I work particularly closely with our private wealth offering.

In recent years, I have been involved in a number of high profile cases, many of which have been reported. I represented Alison Sharland and Varsha Gohil in their successful “landmark” appeals to the Supreme Court, where the seven Supreme Court judges unanimously determined that the orders which had been made in their cases should be set aside, each of the women successfully securing costs orders against their opponents. I also represented Helen Roocroft, in her successful appeal to the Court of Appeal last year, which was said to be another “landmark ruling”.

The law is not one size fits all. I will always work to get the result that is right for each client, whilst also making sure they have a clear understanding of the possible outcomes from the start.

What Inspired You To Get Into Law?

In 1993 I met two incredible women. They were family lawyers. They supported me in changing career paths and qualifying as a solicitor.

I love a challenge, and I thrive on it – though I always prefer to reach an agreement wherever possible. Although the family Court is a difficult place for everyone, I believe we have a fair system in this country and can influence decisions and change things for the better.

What Is The Most Rewarding Aspect Of Your Role?

People come to us at what is usually a distressing time in their lives. Helping them work through that and achieve a resolution in the face of adversity is very rewarding.

What Do You Do Away From The Office?

I absolutely love the Archers. I’m also a Kindle convert and make time to read every night. While I’d love to say I have many energetic pursuits, unfortunately it’s not true! I enjoy baking and periodically do go on a baking spree. I have three sons, so life outside work is a bit hectic as they take up most of my time when I’m not working.

She specialises in complex financial and children matters, particularly ultra-high net worth matters with business and/or international aspects.  Clare recently acted in the leading case of DB v PB which was the first time the English courts determined the effect of an international prorogation clause on a pre-nuptial agreement.

She is also a qualified collaborative lawyer and an experienced advocate.

What Inspired You To Get Into Law?

As a young child I was fascinated by courts, barristers and TV programmes about the law in general. After studying law at university I considered joining the police but soon realised working night shifts was not for me!

What Is The Most Rewarding Aspect Of Your Role?

I enjoy being able to support people through challenging times. As a lawyer you have many opportunities to showcase all sides of your personality from the tough negotiator through to the sympathetic friend and confidante.

What Do You Like About Working At Irwin Mitchell?

Irwin Mitchell enables me to offer a holistic service to all clients which is not just restricted to my subject area. The expertise within the firm also allows me to advise in greater detail on aspects of my cases involving businesses, trusts, complex property issues and so on.

What Do You Do Away From The Office?

I am a mother-of-three so understand the challenges of family life. I sit on the Board of Trustees of a local nursery and whenever possible, I try to find time to keep fit and enjoy time outdoors away from a desk. I enjoy travel and spending time at our little wooden chalet in the Austrian Alps.
