Benoît Goemans graduated at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, as a Candidate in law and as a Licentiate in law, at the Tulane University (New Orleans) as a LL.M. in Admiralty (1989) and at the Universiteit Antwerpen (Diploma Maritime law and laws of the Inland Waterways, 1990).
Benoît Goemans was called at the Antwerp bar (Belgium) in 1987, he is a founding partner of Goemans, De Scheemaecker Advocaten. His practice is mainly related to the maritime and transport activity, both as a litigator and as a drafter of instruments.
He was a Professor of maritime law and marine insurance (Université de Liège 1995-1996, Université catholique de Louvain, 1994 – 2008, Universiteit Hasselt 1999 2008) and guest speaker at the University of Antwerp (since 1997) and at a postgraduate degree of the French speaking universities in Belgium (1997 – 2008).
He was a member of the Group of Experts and of the Royal Commission to the revision of the Belgian maritime law.
He is or was:
– a member of the Executive Council of the CMI and the Treasurer thereof (since 2001) ;
– a member of the Board of Directors of the Belgian Maritime Law Association and Vice President thereof (since 2012);
– a member of the General Council of the Belgian Maritime Law Association (2001 – 2004) ;
– a member of the Council of the European Institute for Maritime Law;
– a member of the Board of Directors and of the Board of Editors of the Jurisprudence du Port d’Anvers – Rechtspraak van de Haven van Antwerpen, a maritime law review founded in 1851;
– a member of the Board of Directors of the French Chamber of Commerce at Antwerp.
He was a guest speaker or reporter on issues of maritime law in Malmö (2007), Brussels (2002, 1996), Buenos Aires (2000), Antwerp (1999, 1997, 1994), London (1997), and Liège (1997).
He submitted amendments to the Belgian Code of International Private Law which have now entered into force.
